ON THE HOOK: UK and EU risk recession if Russian gas and oil banned
A total ban on Russian oil & gas imports would spell a disaster both for the UK and the EU - that’s according to UK chancellor Rishi Sunak.
During a cabinet meeting last week, Sunak reportedly claimed the UK will suffer a £70bn hit and enter recession if Europe cuts energy ties with Russia, as proposed by Western European leaders. (Independent)
While Britain imports only 8% of the Russian oil, the EU relies on it much more heavily - nearly 40%, and the economic shockwaves caused by a possible ban will hit London too.
